Inconsistent Performance

Inconsistent Performance: People with ADHD are well known for their inconsistent performance. They can oscillate between very positive, productive days and days of frustration and challenge. This is no-body’s fault, but must be understood. Try to avoid the idea that if the student was capable yesterday, then why not today? A variety of factors impact on the motivation and follow through of a person with ADHD. The school environment is only one factor. Try to remain patient, provide regular feedback and allow for changes in performance.
Transition times are particularly challenging for many people with ADHD. “Shifting Gears” from one type of activity to another can be extremely difficult. Use of increased structure, routine and reinforcements can be a useful strategy to assist.
